Understanding Battery Basics

Before diving into batteries and battery packs, it's helpful to have a basic understanding of some core principles in physics and electronics. This knowledge can enhance safety, efficiency, and performance in your projects.

Key Concepts to Know:

Series (S) and Parallel (P) Configurations:
  • These arrangements impact the overall voltage and current.
  • Series (S) increases voltage while keeping current constant.
  • Parallel (P) increases current capacity while maintaining the same voltage.
Amps, Volts, and Watts (Power):

These are the fundamental units you'll work with:

  • Amps measure current flow.
  • Volts measure electrical potential.
  • Watts (Power) = Volts × Amps, showing the total energy output.
AC vs. DC (Alternating Current vs. Direct Current):

Most batteries produce DC, which is ideal for electronics and portable devices. Understanding the difference is essential when connecting batteries to different types of devices or power systems.

Battery Management System (BMS):

Essential for safe charging and discharging, the BMS regulates and protects battery cells from overcharge, over-discharge, and short circuits.
